Spherics is thrilled to announce we have been certified as a B Corporation. Sustainability is core to our business mission so it’s great for that to be recognised by such a creditable auditor.
Rather than just pat ourselves on the back, we wanted to share some information about the process and how it works, plus lay on the line our score - all in the name of transparency.
Certified B Corporations, or B Corps, are companies verified by the Global B Lab organisation to meet high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability.
Companies such as Spherics need to complete a number of assessments before a member of B-Corp completes a supporting audit. Once the internal work and B-Corp assessment is done the B-Corp score is awarded, keep reading to see how we did!
It's a small cost to pay for what is a very good external audit of your company's impact. In monetary terms, there is a small holding fee to begin with of £250, and a certification cost which is depending on annual sales, this ranges from £1,000 to £50,000. Rates also vary by market.
It’s not a quick one, the process took us around 200 staff hours with 4 team members involved. But with that sort of rigour we know we are in amongst good company. You can also expect to commit 100-300 staff hours to the process, depending on the size and complexity of your organisation, and the impact areas applicable to you. It’s a time consuming process, but really helped us understand where we are as a company.
We scored 99.1 out of 200, which puts us above average for organisations of our size and sector, whilst leaving significant scope for growth within the B Impact framework.
We scored highly in the governance impact area, largely due to the clarity and ambitious mission to illuminate the path to net zero by 2030 for millions of businesses, by providing quick and affordable technologies to support their journey. By incorporating the B Corp legal amendments into our articles of association, we ‘locked in’ our mission which helped significantly with the points in this section, and declares our intentions as a company to the rest of the world. Having robust and clear policies in place around ethical decision making, internal management and oversight all supported our high score here too.
We’re also proud of our score in the environment impact area. We used the Spherics platform to calculate our own emissions and we were able to report figures safe in the knowledge that the methodology behind them is scientific and robust. Knowing where we are today means we can plan for a cleaner future in our operations.
The area where we have most room for improvement out of this process is the community impact area. Building and working with healthy communities is really important to us, but as we are still in the early stages of building and scaling our organisation, our main focus has been internal. Looking forward, we are excited to engage with our local communities, and the global sustainability community through outreach, giving and advocacy work.
“Working through the B Corp certification has been challenging, eye-opening and immensely rewarding. The depth and rigour behind the B Impact Assessment process is evident from the moment you engage with it. Going through the process has shown us where we are doing well, what we’re missing, and has inspired us to continually step up our operations and impact to create the world we want to live and work in. If you are an organisation that cares about the world we live in, get started on the road to becoming a B Corporation like us and thousands of other businesses!”

As highlighted with the blog “environmental impact” of a significant part of the B-Corp audit process. Using Spherics carbon accounting software within your response is a sure fire way to help you B-Corp reporting. Don’t just take our word for it.
The metrics that Spherics provides us with also makes our B Corp reporting so much simpler, helping us on our journey to becoming officially certified.
